Top rankings for Audi A4, A8 and S8 in “AUTO TEST” and from “J.D. Power”
The biggest survey of German car owners has just been published, and two prizes have gone to the Audi A4, A8 and S8. In the Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study organized by J.D. Power, the Audi A8 and S8 are well ahead of the field, and the editors of the car magazine “Auto TEST” chose the Audi A4 as “2010 AUTO TEST Champion” in silver.
“Awarding the A4 the title of “2010 AUTO TEST Champion” in silver is evidence that Audi is up front in car quality and customer satisfaction!” said Michael-Julius Renz, Head of Sales Germany at AUDI AG, after receiving the prize at the Axel Springer House in Berlin. “Comparisons between more than 500 tests and buying recommendations covering a whole year tell us that this award is well deserved.”
The editors of the “AUTO TEST” car magazine use a complex evaluating scheme to determine the winners of their award. As well as classic categories like acceleration, stopping distance and fuel consumption, the car’s standard of safety and its running costs are assessed. The result is also influenced by the number of defects registered by the Rhineland “TÜV”, an official motor vehicle inspection organization, and the value computed by “Eurotax Schwacke”. Customers’ answers to questionnaires issued by the reputable market research institute J.D. Power and Associates were another factor in the run-up to the title “2010 AUTO TEST Champion”.
The Audi A8 and the sporty S8 model triumphed in the J.D. Power Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study. According to the market researchers, the forerunner of the current A8 recorded the highest percentage of satisfied owners in the large-car market segment.
The Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study conducted by J.D. Power and Associates is the largest survey of its kind among German car owners, and was first organized in 2002. This year 16,330 drivers were interviewed online and asked for their opinions in the following categories: quality/reliability, desirability, servicing and running costs. Only those who had driven their car for about two years and covered an average of 34,000 kilometers (21,125 miles) were asked to participate.
Race a Bimmer on the weekend? Hate ordering parts (and paying the premium) from Europe? Well, your prayers have been answered, as BMW Motorsports parts are now available directly to U.S. customers. The move means grassroots and pro teams will have better access, and likely at lower prices, than ever before.
The full catalog of parts is available at the BMW Motorsport site, and you can order directly or head to one of the four BMW centers selling the parts over the counter. There’s one in Atlanta, one in Westmont, Illinois, one Stratham, New Hampshire, and the fourth in Solon, Ohio. The current parts catalogs support 2008 Z4s, 1995-present M3s, and 2006-present 3-Series sedans.
That won’t do anything for the Spec E30 crowd, but they’re used to “alternative” sourcing (junkyards, parts cars and aftermarket) by now anyway. The E36 and E46 3-Series BMWs are frequently found on autocross courses, HPDEs, track days and amateur races around the country, though, so there’ll be plenty of people glad to hear the news, and the high-rollers in the E90 hardware or newer Z4s will also be able to stock their rigs with plenty of gear.
The parts are only intended for use on “motorsport/racing/off-road BMW vehicles” of course, so you may be out of luck if you want to mod your daily driver and stay street-legal. But isn’t it time to gut it, cage it, and throw some real hardware at it anyway?

Audi may unveil a new concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
While details are limited, Audi stated their press conference will feature a “showcar (that) underscores Vorsprung durch Technik (advancement through technology).”
We’re not exactly sure what to expect, but Audi’s production timetable seems to suggest the company will unveil a concept version of the next-generation A3 or A6. Other possibilities include the long-rumored R4 roadster and the entry-level Q3 crossover. Audi will also show the new A8 which was unveiled earlier this month in Miami.

The Porsche Panamera has only been on sale in other parts of the world for three months now, but the automaker has already cranked out the 10,000th production example. The Panamera is built on the same production line as the Cayenne SUV at Porsche’s Liepzig plant in northeastern Germany. So far, Porsche has taken some 9,000 orders for the new five-door grand touring hatchback and it has yet to go on sale in the United States. Porsche is currently planning to build about 20,000 Panamera units annually at the Liepzig factory. The 10,000th car? A silver Turbo destined for Singapore. |

We’ve learned via an official from Audi of Singapore that its parent group Volkswagen might be entering Formula 1 in the coming seasons if the costs continue to come down. Reinhold Carl, the managing director of Audi Singapore, is quoted by the Straits Times newspaper that while budgets are dropping, teams are still facing over a hundred million euros to keep their Formula 1 programs running.
“If the cost is lower, it will be more manageable”, he told reporters.
It may be a bit late since many great marques have recently dropped out of the race, BMW, Jaguar, Honda have already pulled out, and there are rumors that Toyota and Renalut might follow soon.
One interesting bit of info from his interview is that should VW decide to enter the grand prix competition, it will most likely be under the brands Porsche or Audi, or maybe even Volkswagen! Skoda Formula 1 team anyone?
